Paula Monteith is a local artist living in the rich agricultural Salinas Valley located one hundred miles south of San Francisco and eighteen miles east of the Monterey Bay. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance, and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Irvine. Her professional career spans forty years of performing, choreographing, directing, lecturing, advising and producing dance and musical theater productions on the Central and Southern California Coast.  In 2011, Paula was introduced to soap making by her father who was a chemistry teacher. Since then, she has been expanding her knowledge and skills in soaping, and her hobby has become a small cottage business. She incorporates natural botanicals from her garden, as well as key ingredients sourced from local farmers in the creation of her recipes including lavender, aloe vera, beeswax, honey, and stinging needle. Soap making for Paula is a fluid art form similar in many ways to dance. Both have movement, color, line, shape, balance, and texture.  Both art forms appeal to the senses. Paula’s handmade usable art soap designs are influenced by her passion for movement, fine art, and the shapes, colors and beauty of nature surrounding her home near the Monterey Bay, Big Sur Coast, and Santa Lucia Mountains. Beautiful swirls are Paula’s hallmark in soap making. She loves dancing in soap!
